An interview with…Scotty Lorimer (England fan in Sofia)
Scotty in Sofia before England’s comprehensive 6-0 victory with his Aldershot Town flag
Hi Scotty, thank you for writing to me from the airport over in Bulgaria before your flight home. It was some performance but what was the mood of the England fans going into the away end last night? Were you optimistic despite the defeat to Czech Republic on Friday?
Oh definitely, we knew that there would be a response from the team. I thought that there would be a battering on the cards but I definitely didn’t think that we would score six!
What words of advice were England fans given ahead of the game?
We were all told that we should not walk through any parks or side streets. We got told to stick to the main streets.
The racist chanting directed at Tyrone Mings and other black England players started in the first half. Could it be heard from the away end?
There was a couple of occasions where you could definitely hear the racist chanting even though we were at the other end of the stadium. We could also see the group of Bulgarian fans being lead out of the stadium towards the end of the first half.
Did the England fans have any idea what was going on when the referee halted the game?
Oh yeah, we kind of had an idea that something was happening when the game was stopped. I knew that the game might get called off when Harry Kane went over to talk to the management.
What did you think of England’s performance?
It was very good. Winks was the stand out player for me, he ran the game.
Tyrone Mings controlled everything at the back and Harry Kane was terrific, digging in and getting a goal.
What punishment do you think that Bulgaria deserve as a result of their fan’s behaviour?
I personally think that they should have to play some matches behind closed doors and maybe should be banned from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
