Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Burnley
Good – home shirt 1989-91
This shirt is really well designed and looks great but will be remembered by Burnley fans for all the wrong reasons as it was at a real low point in their history.
This shirt came out for Burnley’s fifth season in the Fourth Division, the basement division of the Football League. They had never been in the Fourth Division in their entire history before relegation from the Third in 1984/85.
In the first season wearing this shirt, Burnley finished 16th in the league. Things got better in the second a final season as they finished a respectable 6th, in the play offs where they lost to Torquay in the semi-finals. A new home shirt was to be worn the following season and they were promoted as champions in it!
Bad – home shirt 1997/98
Burnley fans were not happy with this shirt, mainly because it was in the same design as local rivals Blackburn Rovers with the coloured quarters.
In fact, Burnley had worn quarter shirts before but only on away shirts.
The large V-neck collar doesn’t look great either and will definitely be looked back on by manufacturer Adidas as a bit of a disaster!
Ugly – away shirt 1993/94
This special shirt was brought out as a celebration for reaching Wembley for the end of season play offs and is a real horror show!
Mitre designed and manufactured the yellow, black and white striped shirt and had ‘Burnley FC Wembley 1994 Special Edition’ stitched on the back as you can see in the picture below.
