On This Day – 2nd February
It was on this day in 1991 that Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the league came to an end as they lost 2-1 away to London rivals Chelsea.
It was their 24th match of the season. Before their trip to Stamford Bridge, The Gunners had won 15 and drawn eight of their league games.
Manager George Graham had drilled his defence into a fantastic working unit, but captain Tony Adams had been sent prison for drink-driving a few weeks before the game. Cracks were starting to show and Chelsea took full advantage.
Graham Stuart scored with a header in the second half before Kerry Dixon slotted Chelsea’s second past David Seaman. Alan Smith scored a goal in the 89th minute but it was too little too late and the run was over.
Rather than letting the result affect them, the Arsenal players went on and won the championship without losing another game that season. It was their second league title in three years and they ended the season having conceded only eighteen goals.
