On This Day – 31st January
A flurry of activity took place at Anfield on this day in 2011, with Fernando Torres leaving the club and Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll coming in.
Torres joined Chelsea for £50 million, a British record deal at the time. He had signed for Liverpool back in 2007 from Athletico Madrid and had scored 81 goals in 142 games.
He won the Champions League whilst at Stamford Bridge in 2012, as well as the FA Cup and Europa League.
Uruguayan international Luis Suarez signed from Ajax a few hours before Carroll put pen to paper. Suarez was a club record signing as he cost Liverpool £22.8 million.
However, Carroll beat that record when Newcastle United accepted a £35 million offer for him.
Andy Carroll did not have a successful time at Liverpool, scoring just eleven goals in 58 games. He was loaned out to West Ham United in his second full season at the club and joined the London club at the end of the 2012/13 season.
Suarez had the greatest impact of the three players, netting 82 goals in 133 games. He left in 2014 to join Barcelona in a deal worth more than £60 million.
