On This Day – 17th January

Bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled off a shock 1-0 win over reigning champions Manchester United on this day back in 2004.

Scottish international Kenny Miller scored the only goal of the game in the 67th minute, latching on to a header from former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin before slotting the ball past Tim Howard.

As well as Irwin, Wolves had another former Manchester United star playing for them in Paul Ince, who was the club’s captain. Irwin retired from the game at the end of this season, but Ince spent another two years at Molineux before short spells at Swindon Town and Macclesfield Town.

The victory was one of Wolves’ highlights of the season. It was their first season in the Premier League and they were relegated after finishing bottom of the league, six points from safety.
Manchester United finished third, fifteen points behind Arsenal who went the whole season unbeaten.
