9th January – Footballing Birthdays
Gennaro Gattuso is 47 today. The former Italian midfielder won 73 caps for the Azzurri and played for Perugia, Glasgow Rangers and Salernitana before joining AC Milan in 1999.
Gattusso would spend thirteen years at the San Siro where he won the Serie A twice and two Champions League titles. He is now the manager of Croatian side Hadjuk Split.
Brazilian Lucas Leiva is 38 today. He spent ten years of his career at Liverpool before moving to Lazio for five years. He started and ended his career in his home country of Brazil at Gremio.
Former Argentina international Claudio Caniggia celebrates his 57th birthday today. Caniggia made a shock move to Scottish side Dundee back in the late 90s but was soon snapped up by Glasgow Rangers.
He won 50 caps for Argentina between 1987 and 2002 and appeared at the 1990 and 1994 World Cup.
Former midfielder Ray Houghton is 63 today. During Houghton’s 21-year career, he won the league championship and FA Cup twice at Liverpool and the League Cup once with Oxford United and Aston Villa.
He will forever be remembered by Republic of Ireland fans for his winning goals against Italy in the 1994 World Cup in 1994 and against England at Euro ’88.
