On This Day – 20th April
It was on this day in 1955 that the first time two sets of brothers appeared for the same international match.
Brothers Ivor and Len Allchurch joined John and Mel Charles in the Wales starting eleven to face Ireland at Windsor Park in Belfast. The match was the final game of the Home Championships – already won by England – and Wales needed a win to avoid finishing in last place. Ireland were a point ahead of them in third and if they were victorious, they would climb above Scotland into second place.
In true football style, it was one of the four brothers that stole the show as John Charles scored a hat-trick and Wales ran out 3-2 winners!
