Leicester City won the first League Cup Final of the 21st century on this day in 2000, beating First Division Tranmere Rovers at Wembley.
This was the second time that The Foxes won the trophy in the space of four years, with their last victory back in 1997 against Middlesbrough.
Matt Elliott gave Leicester the lead on 29 minutes, thumping in a header from a Steve Guppy corner. The Leicester captain was completely unmarked and he had enough time to run into space and head home.
Match referee Alan Wilkie picked up a nasty injury shortly after the hour mark and had to be replaced by the Fourth official Phil Richards.
David Kelly equalised for Tranmere with 77 minutes gone. Matt Elliott was at fault for the goal as he was ball-watching, which gave Kelly the extra space to fire past Tim Flowers at his near post.
Four minutes later, Elliott added his second of the game to win the game for Leicester. It was the same routine as his opener, a corner on the left from Steve Guppy and a header from the Leicester City captain.
After this League Cup triumph, Leicester went sixteen years without a trophy. The drought came to an end when they shocked the footballing world by winning the Premier League in 2015/16.
