On This Day – 13th February
Kevin Keegan was announced as the new England manager on this day in 1999, replacing Glenn Hoddle.
The twice winner of the Ballon d’Or started well, with a 3-1 victory over Poland at Wembley. He guided England to the 2000 European Championships after beating Scotland 2-1 over a two-legged play-off.
England performed dismally at Euro 2000, winning one and losing two of their three group games. In both of the defeats (against Portugal and Romania) England managed to throw away a lead.
Keegan resigned after a 1-0 defeat to Germany in the final match played at the old Wembley Stadium in a World Cup qualifier. His record with England was seven wins, seven draws and four defeats from eighteen games.
