Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.29
This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ comes from Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier. The midfielder famously scored a free-kick in England’s World Cup Semi-Final against Croatia three years ago, but this own goal is a moment he would rather forget!
The own goal came in a league match away to Chelsea in February 2019. The hosts were already 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Spanish international Pedro and Trippier’s moment of embarrassment came in the 85th minute to give Chelsea all three points.
Trippier chased back towards goal after a loose ball that was intended for Chelsea’s left winger Willian. The ball was well away from the Brazilian and Trippier had the simple task of playing the ball back to his goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The Tottenham defender had a moment of hesitation and looked over his shoulder to see where Willian was. He then hit the ball too hard and wide of the advancing Lloris, giving the French number one no chance of getting it as it sped past him and into the open goal.
Trippier’s moment of shame was definitely one for the own goal aficionados. It had the embarrassment factor, combined with the sheer stupidity and the look of despair and confusion from the scorer’s own goalkeeper!
