On This Day – 16th January
Chelsea fans were in seventh heaven on this day back in 2010 as Chelsea beat Sunderland 7-2 at Stamford Bridge.
Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring after eight minutes. The Frenchman broke the Sunderland offside trap, took the ball around goalkeeper Martin Fulop and rolled the ball home.
Florent Malouda doubled the lead after 17 minutes before Ashley Cole added a third after 22 minutes. Frank Lampard scored Chelsea’s fourth after 34 minutes to give the home side a commanding lead at the interval.
Chelsea’s German midfielder Michael Ballack added a fifth seven minutes after the restart before Boudewijn Zenden scored Sunderland’s first goal of the game in the 56th minute. Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard both scored their second goals of the game before Sunderland’s Darren Bent scored the final goal of the game in stoppage time.
Chelsea went on to win the Premier League at the end of the season, eating Manchester United by a single point. They racked up a hugely impressive 103 goals in their 38 league games. Sunderland finished 13th place.
