On This Day – 25th December
It was on this day in 1957 that the last time that a full programme of Football League matches was played Christmas Day.
There were several high-scoring games to treat those fans who had left the warmth of their home to watch their heroes from the terraces. Blackpool beat Leicester City 5-1 and Sheffield Wednesday drew 4-4 at home to Preston North End. The highest-scoring game was at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea beat Portsmouth 7-4, with a 17-year-old Jimmy Greaves scoring four of the home team’s goals.
The last English League match on Christmas Day took place in 1965, when Blackpool beat fellow Lancastrians Blackburn Rovers 4-2 at Bloomfield Road.
Meanwhile in Scotland, Christmas Day football continued until 1976, when Clydebank and St Mirren played out a 2-2 draw and Alloa Athletic beat Cowdenbeath 2-1.
