Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Barnsley

Barnsley’s Tony Popovic questions a referee’s decision in a match against Liverpool

Good – Home shirt 1997/98
Barnsley’s unexpected promotion to the Premiership in 1997 suddenly meant that everybody now had a second team. It seemed as if everyone had a soft spot for Barnsley, the plucky underdogs who were enjoying their time in the limelight.
Barnsley brought out a new kit for the season and it was a lovely shirt. Sponsored by Admiral, the shirt was completely red apart from a white collar with the Admiral logo above the Barnsley crest and the sponsors name ‘ORA’ across the middle.
Barnsley wore the shirt when they famously beat Manchester United in the FA Cup and it will always be remembered by Barnsley fans because it was worn in their first (and so far only) time in the top flight.

Barnsley’s home kit for the 1989/90 season

Bad – 1989/90 Home shirt
This shirt was worn in the last few months of the ’80s and first few months of the ’90s and just doesn’t look good at all in my opinion.
The sleeves were red and split the body of the shirt was mainly white, something very unusual for Barnsley shirts.
Barnsley played in the Second Division in this season and were managed by Mel Machin.

Ugly 1994/95 Away shirt
This shirt was frankly awful. A dark bottle green colour with thin white and red vertical stripes, here’s hoping that future kit developers leave it in the past and don’t try to make a modern version of it!
