Heroes & Villains – Northampton Town

Heroes – The Team of 1964/65
The 1964/65 season was a remarkable one for Northampton Town as the club finished runners up in the old Second Division. This meant that the club were promoted to the First Division for the first time in their history.

Two defeats in Northampton’s first five games were followed by an eighteen match unbeaten run. This came to an end with a 5-0 defeat away to eventual champions Newcastle United.
Northampton would only lose three matches after that drubbing at St James’s Park and also went the whole season unbeaten at home!

The following season, Northampton finished 21st and were relegated with Blackburn Rovers who finished well adrift at the bottom.

Villains – Peterborough United
Northampton have a long-standing rivalry with Peterborough United. The two sides have first payed each other in the FA Cup back in 1946, with the two sides playing two 1-1 draws before Northampton won 8-1 in the second replay!
Peterborough have the edge over Northampton in the head-to-head record, having won 33 games to Northampton’s 21. The two have also drawn against each other 19 times.
