On This Day – 6th November
If you thought it was bad when Barcelona threw a pig’s head at Luis Figo when he returned to the Nou Camp with Real Madrid, that’s nothing!
On this day back in 1965 that Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie had a hand grenade thrown at him by visiting Millwall fans in a league game at Griffin Park!
One of the 14,805 spectators thought it wise to chuck the grenade at Brodie during the match. The Brentford keeper picked it up, looked at it before tossing it into the back of the net and carried on concentrating on the game!
Millwall won 2-1 and the grenade was given a close examination after the game. Luckily it was found to be a replica, but only adds to the idea of Millwall fans being a law unto themselves!
Chic Brodie became better known a few years later when a stray dog ran onto the pitch when he was playing for Brentford at Colchester United’s Layer Road. The dog knocked Brodie to the ground and shattered his kneecap, effectively ending his playing career in the process. You can read more about the incident by clicking here.
