On This Day – 5th November

Emlyn ‘Crazy Horse’ Hughes won the first of his 62 caps for England on this day back in 1969 as England beat Holland 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam.
Hughes played as a left back and Colin Bell scored the only goal of the game with five minutes of the game left to play. Holland’s left back was also making his international debut that day. His name was Ruud Krol and he who would go on to win many honours with the hugely successful Ajax team of the 1970’s and also reach the Final in both World Cups in the same decade.

Hughes also enjoyed a successful 1970’s with Liverpool, who he had joined from Blackpool in 1967. He would go on to play for England until 1980, by which time he had left Anfield to join Wolverhampton Wanderers where he won the League Cup in his first season at the club.

After Hughes’ playing career was over, he became a television celebrity and was most remembered for his time as a captain on Question of Sport. He famously flirted with Princess Anne when she appeared as a contestant on the show in 1987.

In 2004 at the age of just 57, Emlyn Hughes died of a brain tumour.
