On This Day – 31st October

Former Republic of Ireland international full back Denis Irwin was born on this day back in 1965.
Irwin was best known for his time at Manchester United, where he won an incredible 19 trophies between 1990 and 2002. This included seven Premier League titles, one Champions League, one European Cup Winners Cup, two FA Cups, one League Cup, four Charity Shields, a European Super Cup and an Intercontinental Cup.

The Irishman started his career at Leeds United in the Second Division before moving to Oldham Athletic. The Lancashire side had their most successful spell when Irwin was at the club, reaching the FA Cup semi final in 1990 and League Cup Final.

Alex Ferguson paid Oldham £625,000 for his services and he went on to spend the next 12 years at the club, winning the trophies listed above. He also won 56 caps for the Republic of Ireland in this time, scoring four goals and appearing in the 1994 World Cup.

After leaving Old Trafford in 2002, Irwin spent the last two years of his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in his first season at Molineux.
Wolves were relegated in the 2003/04 season and at Irwin decided to finally hang up his boots at the ripe old age of 38!
