On This Day – 8th September
Bobby Moore made his debut for West Ham United on this day back in 1958, in a 3-2 victory over Manchester United at Upton Park.
Moore was only 17 years old and the 35,672 fans in Upton Park that afternoon were then able to say with pride that they were there to see the future England captain make his professional debut!
Bobby Moore is famous for his part to play in England’s World Cup triumph and one of his team mates in the 1966 team was also on the pitch. The player in question was a certain Bobby Charlton, playing in an attacking role for the the visitors.
John Smith, John Dick and Malcolm Musgrove scored for the hosts whilst Wilf McGuinness and Colin Webster netted for Manchester United.
Bobby Moore went on to play 647 times for West Ham United before moving on to play for three years at Fulham. He also won 108 caps for England between 1962 and 1973.
