On This Day -30th August

Steve McManaman left Real Madrid on this day back in 2003, joining his former England manager Kevin Keegan at Manchester City.
McManaman signed from Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he had spent four successful years, winning La Liga twice and two Champions League trophies. In his first Champions League final, Mc Manaman was man of the match and scored Madrid’s third goal in a 3-0 win over Spanish counterparts Valencia.

McManaman’s former Liverpool team mate Robbie Fowler was also at Manchester City having joined in January 2003. His time at City wasn’t an entirely happy one as he suffered from several injuries and failed to live up to his fantastic form seen at the Bernabeu and Liverpool. Shaun Wright-Phillips had also burst onto the scene and made the right wing position his own.

In the summer of 2005, McManaman was released on a free transfer by Stuart Pearce who had taken over from Kevin Keegan two months before the end of the 2004/05 season. He decided that it was a good time to hang up his boots and retired at the age of 33.
