Euro 96 Revisited – 15th and 16th June

After the country celebrated England’s victory over their arch-rivals Scotland, France and Spain played out a 1-1 draw in Newcastle.

France took the lead just after half-time with a goal from Youri Djorkaeff. The striker latched on to a chipped ball over the top of the defence by Christian Karambeau before a composed right footed shot past Andoni Zubizarretta.
Jose Caminero equalised for the Spaniards with only five minutes of the match remaining. France were unable to clear a Spanish corner and Caminero hit a shot in from the edge of the box.

On Sunday 16th, Germany won convincingly 3-0 over a poor Russian side.
Their goals all came in the second half, Matthias Sammer scored the opener before Jurgen Klinsmann scored twice in the last quarter of an hour.

In the evening kick-off, Croatia beat holders Denmark 3-0 at Hillsborough in a game that saw the best tournament of the goal so far.
Davor Suker scored a penalty after 54 minutes before Zvonimir Boban added a second after 81 minutes.
Denmark went forward in injury time to try and get a goal back, with goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel joined the attack.
The Croats managed to regain possession and broke away with Peter Schmeichel racing back to try and get back in his goal. He managed to get into his penalty area before Davor Suker lifted a fantastic lob over him to win the game 3-0.

There is no football to be played tomorrow before the final Group A matches are played on Tuesday 18th June. Scotland play Switzerland at Villa Park, needing a win to stand any hope of qualifying for the Quarter Finals.
Hosts England face Holland at Wembley Stadium and will qualify if they avoid defeat. It won’t be easy for England as Holland look a force to be reckoned with.
