On This Day – 6th May

Blackburn Rovers were relegated from the Premier League on this day back in 1999.
It was only 1,453 days since they lifted the Premier League championship trophy at Anfield after just pipping Manchester United to the title on the last day of the season.

A lot had changed at Ewood Park in the four years since the league win. Rovers’ main goalscorer Alan Shearer had joined Newcastle United in the summer of 1996 and the goals had dried up.
Kenny Dalglish had left a few weeks after he guided the team to the title and a succession of managers had tried and failed to replicate his success.
Ray Harford, Tony Parkes and Roy Hodgson had taken the hot-seat and Brian Kidd was the man at the helm when Rovers went down.

They would spend two years in the First Division before gaining promotion back to the Premiership. Another 11 years in the Premier League followed but they haven’t returned to the top flight since getting relegated in the 2011/12 season.
