Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.2

Guillaume Warmuz looks baffled as he picks the ball out of the back of the net after Franck Queudrue lobbed him from about 40 yards out

Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.2 – Franck Queudrue for Lens vs Bastia 7th April 2001

Only 5,612 fans were inside the Bastia’s Stade Armand Casari to witness this beauty of an own-goal. French football wasn’t shown on English television at the time so Franck Queudrue must have thought he would be saved from anyone seeing it again.

Unfortunately for the Lens left-back, Sky’s Soccer Am included it in their DVD called ‘The Greatest Goals of All-Time’, allowing thousands of people to see it all over again! I bought that DVD and if I hadn’t, it is doubtful that this own-goal would have been included in this series!

Franck Queudrue’s least favourite DVD as it also included the presenter’s favourite own-goals!

To compound the misery for the Frenchman, YouTube came along and a clip of the own goal was uploaded to the site back in February 2009.
To date, the video has been watched over 347,000 times leaving the video out for anyone to see it.

Lens were winning 3-0 after 58 minutes of the league match when Bastia had possession of the ball out on the right wing, just inside Lens’ half.
The ball was pinging about and an over-hit forward pass by a Bastia midfielder dropped in front of Queudrue, around 40 yards from his own-goal.

The left-back inexplicably whacked the ball on the volley back towards his own-goal. The ball flew high up in the air and over Guillaume Warmuz, the Lens goalkeeper who was stood eight yards from his goal-line.
Warmuz tracked back desperately trying to get the ball. He clawed at the ball as it dropped out of the sky. Sadly for Queudrue, Warmuz missed it and the ball bounced on the goal-line and into the back of the net.

Middlesbrough manager must have decided to overlook this freak own-goal as he decided to bring Franck Queudrue in on loan six months later.
The Frenchman joined permanently at the end of the season, staying at the Riverside Stadium until 2006.
