On This Day – 6th April

Terry Venables is unveiled as Egnland manager, January 1994

Terry Venables had become England Manager in January 1994 and a few friendlies had been set up for the first few months of his tenure.
Denmark were beaten by a single goal in Venables’ first game in charge. The game was played on 9th March and was settled in the 18th minute by David Platt.

A tougher test awaited in Germany, who England were due to play in Munich on 20th April. The game never went ahead though as someone in the Football Association realised that a potential PR disaster was awaiting if this game went ahead.

On this day in 1994, The FA announced that England’s friendly in Germany on 20th April would not take place as scheduled. The reason behind the cancellation was that it was the anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birthday.
Mass protests had been arranged in Germany on that date and the wise decision to cancel the game went ahead.
