The Far Post Header ‘Hall of Fame’ No.3 – Eusebio

Eusebio is the third player to feature in the Far Post Header ‘Hall of Fame’.
He played the majority of his career with Benfica where he scored more than a goal a game, with 473 goals in 440 games. He scored 41 goals in 64 appearances for Portugal.

Eusebio was the top goalscorer in the 1966 World Cup with an impressive nine goals. Portugal reached the Semi Finals before losing 2-1 to hosts and eventual winners England. He famously left the pitch in tears after the England defeat and the Semi-Final is referred to as ‘The Game of Tears’.

It was in the Quarter Finals though that Eusebio made a name for himself. North Korea raced into a three goal lead against Portugal but Eusebio scored four of Portugal’s five goals to send them through to the Semi Final.

He won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and was the runner up in 1962 and 1966.
In fifteen years at Benfica, Eusebio won the league title eleven times and the European Cup once. Benfica were also European Cup Finalists on three separate occasions in that time.

Eusebio left Benfica in 1975 before going on a bit of a tour around North America, playing for eight clubs in five years.
