A blog about all things football

Wild Haircut XI

Following on from last week’s team made up of players with moustaches, I thought that I’d try and make a team up of eleven with awful hairstyles.
I don’t have them in any set positions, I’ve just accumulated a list of the worst hairdos.
Ian Walker
Former Spurs goalkeeper will be the goalkeeper for the team with his boy-band style curtains from the 90’s.
Walker was the first choice keeper at Spurs for a number of years and appeared four times for England, only one of those was for the 90 minutes though.
Nigerian Taribo West

Taribo West had some green dreadlocks, the colour of his national team Nigeria.  West had quite a good career, playing for both Inter and AC Milan.

He also went on loan to Derby at the start of the millennium and at the tail end of his career made five appearances for Plymouth Argyle!

Terry Mancini during his Arsenal days
Next on my list is Terry Manicini with his odd hairstyle back in the mid ’70s at Arsenal.  He really should have just shaved his head completely as he looked about 50 years old!

Terry Mancini was signed by Arsenal manager Bertie Mee to offer some experience at the back and hopefully keep them in the old First Division.  He did just that but is remembered by Arsenal fans of a certain age for being in the awful side of the mid 70s that were almost relegated.
Venison’s golden mullet

Barry Venison also makes the team with his strange mullet that he sported in the 1990’s.
Venison had his blond mullet when appearing for Liverpool, Newcastle United and Southampton and it certainly made him stand out on the pitch.
Despite a shocker of a haircut, Venison made it into the England team and played in two matches in the 94/95 season.

John Dempsey or Velma
John Dempsey will always be remembered by fans who watched Chelsea during his time at the club for his hairdo.
I personally think that he looks a little bit like Velma from Scooby Doo!

Carlos Valderrama has the dubious honour of being in both my Moustache XI and Wild Haircut XI.
The Colombian was instantly recognisable with his frizzy afro bouncing on top of his head when playing in his 90’s heyday.
Colombia’s Carlos Valderrama

Bobby Charlton’s comb-over
Bobby Charlton sported a comb-over hair cut for the majority of his career.  This is another case (like Terry Mancini’s) where he sould probably have just shaved all of his hair off!

Rudi Voller, pre-perm
Germany’s Rudi Voller had an awful mullet during some of his career but then went for another awful hairdo and went for a bubble perm!

Ian Marshall
Ian Marshall of Oldham Athletic and later Ipswich Town probably had a better mullet than the one Voller is pictured with.  It would bounce up and down as he ran and he wouldn’t have looked out of place in a 1980’s soft-rock band!
Mike Werner of Germany’s Hansa Rostock.  There are no words to be said.

Jason Lee, complete with pineapple
Mike Werner
Jason Lee of Nottingham Forest was known more for his awful pineapple-style haircut during his career in the 90’s than his actual footballing ability.
Crowds everywhere started chants of “He’s got a pineapple on his head” at Lee!
Frank Skinner and David Baddiel regularly ridiculed the haircut on their television show Fantasy Football League and Lee blamed them during a dip in his form.

Now I have eleven players to take to the field, they will need some opponents.
Look no further!  The Romania team of the France 98 World Cup have accepted the offer of a game.  The team all bleached their hair after their manager agreed to shave his head if they qualified from the group after two games and they wanted to do something different too!
