On This Day – 4th March
It was on this day back in 1967 that the first League Cup Final was played at Wembley Stadium. It was a Final to remember as Queens Park Rangers came from two goals down to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2.
QPR were in the old Third Division at the time and West Brom were in the First. Albion were red-hot favourites as they played two divisions above Rangers. They were also the holders of the competition, having beaten X the previous season.
This was the seventh season of the League Cup and the Final used to be played over two legs, with both Finalists playing each other home and away. This was the first season that the Final was played at Wembley and a bumper crowd of 97,952 fans cheered on their respective teams.
Albion striker Clive Clark gave Albion a 7th minute lead. He then doubled Albion’s lead on 36 minutes. Rangers’ Mike Keen hit the post just before half-time and the score was 2-0 at the interval.
QPR came out a different side in the second half and went all-out to try and get back into the game. Their efforts were finally rewarded when Roger Morgan headed in a cross from Mark Lazarus after 63 minutes.
Rodney Marsh then grabbed an equaliser for with a quarter of an hour to go. Rangers completed the comeback when after 81 minutes, Mark Lazarus fired in after a goalmouth scramble.
The season ended with QPR lifting the Third Division Championship whilst West Brom finished 13th in Division One.
