Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the Past – Plymouth Argyle
Good – home shirt 1983/84
Just the mention of the 1983/84 season to any Plymouth Argyle fan of a certain age will have them spinning yarns of the ’84 Cup run.
The club reached the FA Cup Semi-Final for the first (and so far only) time in their history, where they lost to a single goal against top-flight Watford. Not bad at all considering they were in the Third Division at the time. Their focus must have been on the Cup as they finished 19th in the league!
The home shirt that they wore that season wasn’t bad, with a black V-neck collar and cuffs on a plain green shirt. There were thin black vertical lines running down the shirt. It was designed and manufactured by a brand called Pilgrim.
Bad – home shirt 1995/96
Another bad shirt worn in a famous big game! This particular design disaster was worn by Argyle in their Third Division Play Off Final victory over Darlington in the 1995/96 season. There definitely seems to be a theme developing here as so many awful shirts have been worn on big occasions.
Argyle fans watching the Darlington game back on video must cringe now looking at this terrible shirt. Strange diagonal black stripes stick out noticeably from the green and white shirt.
Ugly – away shirt 2017/18
What were Puma thinking when they designed this blurry, psychedelic lime green and black away shirt?
I can’t think that the shirt went down well in Devon amongst the Argyle faithful. It’s something that you wouldn’t want to look at with a hangover!
The only positive thing that I can think of is that it won’t clash with any other team’s shirts as no one would be brave (or daft!) enough to have such a hideous design!
