Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Newcastle United
Good – home shirt 1995 – 97
This shirt was first worn in the 1995/96 season, a season that I review here.
It was the first shirt that Adidas produced after taking over from sports brand Asics. The grandad-style collar (I had to Google that!) was a very unique design and set the shirt away from the others out at the time.
As seen above, Alan Shearer returned back to his native Newcastle in the summer of 1996 and wore the shirt in his first season at the club, scoring 28 goals in his first 40 goals for the club.
Bad – away shirt 1997/98
This was a particularly bad designed shirt and has been forgotten by many fans.
A green and orange striped sash ran down the right hand side of the dark blue shirt. The collar was also green and orange striped.
Ugly – away shirt 2009/10
I can’t believe that this kit was popular in Tyneside when it was unveiled in the summer of 2009!
The shirt was made up of two tones of vertical yellow stripes and looked awful. I think that this has to be Newcastle’s worst ever kit design in their history!
