A blog about all things football

On This Day – 3rd February

It was on this day in 1940 that the record for most matches postponed across Britain.
War had been declared against Germany exactly five months previously and a Wartime League had been set up. The leagues were set up geographically to save on travel costs.

During the Second World War, some players made guest appearances for other clubs to get some game time.
Incidentally, my team Aldershot did very well in the Wartime League, owing to guest appearances from First Division players who were stationed in the nearby Aldershot barracks!

Going back to the 3rd February 1940, only one game got the all-clear (excuse the pun!) and that was at Home Park, the home ground of Plymouth Argyle. The visitors were Bristol City who probably wished that they’d never turned up. Argyle annihilated City 10-3!

The photo at the top of the page is of the 1939/40 Plymouth Argyle team, less than two months before the outbreak of the Second World War.
