On This Day – 3rd February
It was on this day in 1960 that Crewe Alexandra were walloped 13-2 by Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane.
It was quite an incredible scoreline, made all the more amazing because the Fourth Division side had held Bill Nicholson’s men to a 2-2 draw four days earlier at their Gresty Road home.
Spurs would win the League and Cup Double the following season, but were doing very well in 1959/60 and were sat at the top of the First Division table. Crewe were in 16th place in the Fourth Division.
The home side were 6-1 up after just half an hour and were leading 10-1 at half-time. They took it easier in the second half, only scoring three more and the visitors also added their second goal of the game.
Les Allen scored five for Tottenham, Bobby Smith grabbed four, Cliff Jones got a hat-trick and Tommy Harmer scored the other.
The result is unsurprisingly Tottenham Hotspur’s record win and Crewe Alexandra’s record defeat!
