On This Day – 9th January

Darren Huckerby scored his second successive hat-trick in a week on this day back in 1999, as Coventry City beat a struggling Nottingham Forest side 4-0 at Highfield Road.

The Coventry striker scored three in a 7-0 win over Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round a week earlier. Paul Telfer also got on the scoresheet to give the home side their first win in eight league games.

The 1998/99 season was a torrid one for Nottingham Forest as they finished bottom of the league, registering only seven wins all season. They were also resoundingly beaten 8-1 at home by eventual champions Machester United a month after their defeat to Coventry.

Coventry finished the season six points clear of the relegation zone and would stay in the Premier League for another two seasons before being relegated. They have not returned to the top flight, but did come very close in the 2022/23 season, only to lose on penalties in the Play-Off Final against Luton Town.
