On This Day – 20th January
Football was played for the first time on a Sunday at twelve Football League grounds on this day back in 1974.
The earliest of the dozen games kicked off at 11:30am at The Den where Millwall hosted Fulham. 15,143 fans turned up to see the home side win 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Brian Clarke. This turned out to be Millwall’s best attendance of the season!
The energy strike that was ongoing in Britain at the time meant that the games had to start early to prevent the floodlights from being used.
To get around a law that stated admission could not be charged, clubs would only allow supporters in if they bought a matchday programme!
