On This Day – 12th January

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first hat-trick for Manchester United on this day back in 2008. It came in a 6-0 demolition of Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

All six goals came in the second half, with Ronaldo opening the scoring four minutes after the restart. Carlos Tevez doubled United’s lead six minutes later and Ronaldo then added his second of the game in the 70th minute.
Rio Ferdinand scored his second league goal of the season in the 85th minute before Ronaldo completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute. Carlos Tevez made it 6-0 in the 91st minute.

The win put Manchester United top of the table, whilst Newcastle stayed in 11th position. The two would play each other at St James’ Park the following month, with Manchester United winning resoundingly 5-1.
