A blog about all things football

On This Day – 10th January

West Ham United put six past Barnsley at Upton Park on this day in 1998 to record their biggest win in the Premier League.

Barnsley were in their first (and so far only) season in the Premier League, having won promotion from the First Division the previous campaign. They had only recorded five victories in the previous 19 games, but had won their last league game 1-0 at home to Derby County.

West Ham, however, were doing very well and the victory kept them in eighth place in the table. This was the same position that they finished the season in. Barnsley finished the season in 19th.

The home side took only five minutes to take the lead, with Frank Lampard finding the net. Frenchman Samassi Abou doubled West Ham’s lead just after the half-hour mark to give them a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Abou added his second of the game seven minutes after the restart, before John Moncur and John Hartson scored in the 57th and 67th minute. Australian international Stan Lazaridis scored the sixth in injury time to secure West Ham’s biggest win of the season.
