Heroes & Villains – Plymouth Argyle
Heroes – 1983/84 squad
There can only be one team in Plymouth Argyle’s 138-year history that should be mentioned here and that’s the 1983/84 squad that reached the FA Cup semi-final.
After starting in the First Round, Argyle beat Southend United, non-league Barking, Newport County, Darlington, West Bromwich Albion and Derby County before drawing Watford in the semi-final.
Sadly for Argyle fans, this was as far as their run went and they were beaten by a single goal, courtesy of Watford’s George Reilly at Villa Park.

Villain – Taribo West
There must have been real excitement at Home Park when Plymouth secured the signature of Nigerian defender Taribo West in the summer of 2005.
The defender was part of the Nigerian side that won the Olympics in 1996 and played in two World Cups. He had also won the UEFA Cup for Inter Milan in the same team as Ronaldo and also played for their rivals AC Milan.
However, despite having a big reputation, West was a complete flop at Home Park. After signing a one-year deal, West played just five times for The Pilgrims before the club decided to end his contract after just two months.
