David Moyes returns to Everton
It has just been announced that David Moyes has replaced Sean Dyche as the manager of Everton, returning to the club he left in 2013 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
The Scot was manager at Goodison Park for eleven years after joining from Preston North End in 2002 and his last managerial role was at West Ham United. He has not managed since leaving the East London club at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Moyes took Everton to their highest-ever Premier League finish when he guided them to fourth place in 2004/05 season. The Toffees only finished in the bottom half of the table twice in his eleven seasons in charge.
With Everton currently in 16th position in the Premier League table, the threat of relegation looms large. Moyes will hopefully add stability and stop the club from being relegated for the first time since the 1950/51 season.
“I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club” Moyes told BBC Sport.
Everton have two home games coming up, with 8th place Aston Villa visiting Goodison Park on Wednesday and Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday. Victory over Peterbrough United on Thursday in the FA Cup means that a run in the FA Cup could also be on the cards.
Time will tell if the phrase “Never go back” proves to be correct, but for now David Moyes has a real job on his hands to ensure that Everton start next season (their first season at their new stadium) as a Premier League side.
