On This Day – 24th September

Former Italian international Marco Tardelli was born on this day back in 1954.

Tardelli’s celebration after scoring in the 1982 World Cup Final is one of the most iconic in the competition’s history. After slamming the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box, the Italian ran off in tears with his fists clenched, shouting with joy.

After playing in Serie C and B with Pisa and Como, Juventus came in and signed him in 1975. He would spend the next ten years of his career in Turin, winning each of the three European trophies in that time.

Whilst at Juve, Tardelli made his debut for the Italian national side in April 1976. He played in the 1978 and 1982 World Cups as well as the 1980 European Championships that were hosted in Italy.

Tardelli made 376 appearances for Juventus before leaving to join Inter Milan in 1985. He would spend two years there before finishing his career in Switzerland with St Gallen. Whilst at Inter, Tardelli travelled out with the Azzurri to the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 but never played.
