On This Day – 4th June
It was on this day in 1977 that Scotland’s fans took over Wembley to watch their side beat England 2-1. The match was not what the day was remembered for, but the Tartan Army’s celebrations after the final whistle.
Thousands of Scotland fans swarmed the pitch to celebrate the win that retained the Home Championship. A few fans jumped onto the both of the goals before their combined weight snapped the crossbars. The posts and nets were taken as souvenirs. Other jubilant fans ripped up part of the Wembley turf and stole corner flags.
Fences were put up around the perimeter of the pitch as a result of the pitch invasion. The celebrations have gone down in football history and one of the most memorable moments at the old Wembley Stadium.
