On This Day – 6th May
Arsene Wenger took charge of his 1235th and final match as Arsenal manager on this day three years ago. His Arsenal side made sure that it was a memorable finale to his 22 year reign by beating Burnley 5-0. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice and Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac and Alex Iwobi completed the scoring.
The club left a commemorative red t-shirt on every seat in the Emirates Stadium for the fans with the words ‘Merci Arsene’ on it. It was a nice touch from the club, who also did the same for the final match at Highbury and also for Dennis Bergkamp Day, when they put orange shirts out in tribute to the Dutchman.
There had been a lot of unrest among the Arsenal fans in the months preceeding the Burnley match. Many fans wanted Wenger to leave and others wanted him to stay. The fans wanted him gone were known as ‘WOBS’ (Wenger Out Brigade!) and they finally got their wish as the Frenchman decided to call it a day after his 22nd season at the club.
After the match was over, Wenger was given a microphone and gave an emotional thank you speech to the fans and players. He was a fantastic manager and did so much, but ultimately ran out of ideas and a new manager was sought. Spaniard Unai Emery was chosen as the man to replace him.
