On This Day – 18th May
It was on this day in 1960 that the iconic European Cup Final between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt took place at Hampden Park in Scotland.
Real won the match 7-3 in front of a huge crowd of 127,621 at the home of Scottish football. The Spanish side had a very strong side, boosted by the world-class talents of Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas. Both players shared all seven of Real’s goals, with Puskas scoring four to Di Stefano’s three.
It was Frankfurt who scored first, with Richard Kress forcing the ball in from close range after 18 minutes. The lead only lasted two minutes before Di Stefano equalised for Real.
The Spanish forward added a second just three minutes later to give Real the lead, chasing in a rebound after Frankfurt goalkeeper Egon Loy fumbled the ball.
Ferenc Puskas added Real’s third just before half time with a powerful drive, before scoring in the 56th, 60th and 71st minute.
Less than a minute after Puskas had scored his fourth and Real’s sixth of the evening, Erwin Stein scored for Frankfurt to take the score to 6-2. Di Stefano then scored in the 73rd minute before Stein scored in the 75th to make it 7-3.
The victory was Real Madrid’s fifth successive European Cup. It was also the last time that Eintracht Frankfurt reached the final of the competition.
