On This Day – 6th April
Gordon Banks made his England debut on this day in 1963. It came in a British Home Championships match at Wembley against Scotland.
Sadly for Banks, England lost the game 2-1 but he would go on and make a total of appearances for England. Three years later, the Leicester City goalkeeper played in all six of England’s World Cup games at Wembley as they went on to beat West Germany in the Final.
The most memorable moment of Banks’ career came in an England shirt. He made a fantastic save from a header by Pele during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, widely regarded the greatest save of all-time.
In 1973, Banks was involved in a car crash and sadly lost sight in his right eye. It effectively ended his career, although he did try to make a comeback. He was forced into retirement at the age of 35.
Gordon Banks was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time and most certainly the greatest that England has ever produced. He died on 12th February 2019 at the age of 81.
