On This Day – 29th April
It was on this day in 1992 that Gary Lineker scored his 48th and final England goal. It came in a 2-2 draw away to CIS (Commonwealth Independent States which later became Russia) in Moscow.
Both countries had qualified for the 1992 European Championships that were to qualify just a few weeks later in Sweden. They weren’t in the same group though, with England joining hosts Sweden with Denmark and France and the CIS pitting their wits against Holland, Germany and Scotland.
Lineker’s goal opened the scoring in Moscow after a quarter of an hour, heading in from a Tony Daley cross. CIS scored a few minutes before and after half time to go 2-1 up, only for Trevor Steven to equalise with 17 minutes of the game remaining.
Three players made their England debut that night. Carlton Palmer played the full 90 minutes, Keith Curle and goalkeeper Nigel Martyn both came on as second half substitutes.
