On This Day – 27th April
Aston Villa’s Peter Withe scored his one and only goal for England on this day in 1983. It came in a 2-0 win over Hungary at Wembley in a qualifying match for the European Championships that were due to be played in France the following year.
Trevor Francis scored England’s first goal in the 31st minute with a near post header from a free-kick from Gordon Cowans. Withe then doubled England’s lead with a on 70 minutes, chesting down across from Liverpool’s Sammy Lee and firing low across the Hungary goalkeeper Bela Katzirz and into the far corner.
Despite this victory over Hungary, England failed to qualify for Euro 84. This put pressure on the manager Bobby Robson to resign. Instead, he stayed on and became a national hero for guiding England to the World Cup Semi Final in 1990.
