On This Day – 1st April
Nottingham Forest put seven goals past Sheffield Wednesday on this day back in 1995. Their strike partnership of Stan Collymore and Dutchman Brian Roy both scored two each as Wednesday were hit for seven in front of home fans at Hillsborough.
Stuart Pearce scored the opening goal of the game after 17 minutes with a free kick. Ian Woan then doubled the lead three minutes later, chasing after a through-ball from Norwegian international Lars Bohinen to fire home.
It was in the second half that the home side capitulated. Brian Roy scored his first of the afternoon just three minutes after the restart before Mark Bright scored Wednesday’s only goal of the game from the penalty spot.
From then on, it was all Forest. Brian Roy added his second of the game with a tap-in after 64 minutes before Stan Collymore scored with a powerful drive from 20 yards.
Two minutes later, Collymore scored his second and Forest’s six of the afternoon. Lars Bohinen saved the best for last with a beautiful first-time shot with the outside of his right foot from the edge of the Wednesday penalty area.
The 1994/95 season was Forest’s most successful in the Premier League era as they finished third, just 12 points behind eventual champions Blackburn Rovers. Sheffield Wednesday ended the season in 13th place.
Two of the goalscorers from the game against Sheffield Wednesday moved on to bigger clubs at the end of the season. Stan Collymore left Nottingham Forest at the end of the season, joining Liverpool for a British record £8.5 million. Lars Bohinen also left the club, moving to champions Blackburn Rovers.
