Football’s Greatest Goals No.58
This week’s ‘Greatest Goal’ won the BBC Match of the Day Goal of the Season in 1973/74. It came in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup between Fulham and Leicester City and was scored by Alan Mullery.
Mullery was playing for Second Division Fulham at the time. He was 32 and back in his second spell at Craven Cottage after spending eight years at fellow London side Tottenham Hotspur.
Whilst at Tottenham, Mullery won the FA Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Cup and captained the side for several years. He also won 35 England caps and played in the 1970 World Cup, scoring in the Quarter Final defeat to West Germany.
Mullery’s goal was an absolute thunderbolt. It came from a cross-field pass out on the left wing and he caught it perfectly with a right foot volley, thumping it hard past Peter Shilton from the edge of the penalty area.
Leicester City went on to win the replay 2-1 and went all the way to the semi final before losing 3-1 to eventual winners Liverpool. Fulham went one better the following season and reached the final, only to lose 2-0 to West Ham United.
