Football’s Greatest Goals No.56

This week’s ‘Greatest Goal’ comes from Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Manchester United. It came against Porto in the 2008/09 season in the Champions League.

2008/09 was a fantastic season for Manchester United. They won the Premier League and League Cup, and reached the semi finals of the FA Cup. They also reached the final of the Champions League, before losing 2-0 to Barcelona.

In the Quarter Final, they played Portuguese side FC Porto. The first leg at Old Trafford ended 2-2 meaning that United needed to score at least once to get through to the semi finals.

It only took United six minutes to take the lead and it was a sensational goal that made all the difference. Cristiano Ronaldo thumped in a wonderful effort from 40 yards and it was the only goal of the game. He picked up a short pass from Brazilian team mate Anderson, took two touches, briefly looked up and hammered the ball hard towards goal.

The ball flew hard past Porto’s goalkeeper Helton and into the far corner of the net. I remember watching the goal at half time in h concourse at the Emirates when I was watching Arsenal vs Villarreal. All of the Arsenal fans watched on in amazement as the replay of the goal was shown over and over.
