On This Day – 8th March
It was on this day in 1974 that the unthinkable happened – West Ham transfer listed Bobby Moore!
Moore had been the England captain when they won the World Cup in 1966. He had been part of the first team squad at West Ham since making his debut in September 1958 at the tender age of 17.
He made his debut for England in 1962 and took over as captain a year later. In 1964, Moore lifted the FA Cup with West Ham. This victory lead to West Ham qualifying for the European Cup Winners Cup and they would go on to win this trophy the following season.
Moore captaining his country through two World Cup Finals, including the famous victory in 1966. He continued the same role at West Ham until 1974 when he was transfer listed on 8th March, before leaving Upton Park for Second Division six days later.
In all, Bobby Moore played 647 times for West Ham and scored 27 goals.
