A blog about all things football

On This Day – 5th March

A record crowd of 75,038 crammed into White Hart Lane on this day in 1938 to watch Tottenham play Sunderland in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup. The large crowd may have been partly to do with the fact that Sunderland were the current FA Cup holders and Raich Carter was among their ranks.

Carter was Sunderland’s captain at the time and was one of the best players to have ever played for the club. Sunderland were enjoying the most successful time in their history. They had won the First Division title in 1936 and followed this up with the FA Cup a season later. Raich Carter was the club captain on both occasions.

Sunderland won the game at Tottenham 1-0, thanks to a goal from Carter to send them through to the Semi Final. They were paired with Huddersfield Town but lost the Semi 3-1 at Ewood Park.
