On This Day -30th March

Malcolm Allison was appointed as the manager of Crystal Palace on this day in 1973. He had left First Division side Manchester City the month before to replace Bert Head as Palace manager.

Allison was unable to prevent Palace from being relegated from the First Division in the last two months of his first season at Selhurst Park. He was expected to get the club straight back out of the Second Division the following season. He managed to do this – but only by relegating them to the Third! The Crystal Palace board had faith that Allison would turn things around. He would surely have been sacked if this had happened today!

The run in the FA Cup semi final in the 1975/76 season was the highlight of Allison’s time at the club. They lost to eventual winners Southampton in the semi final at Stamford Bridge.

Allison left the club in May 1976 but returned five years later for a two-month spell. He was unable to save the club from relegation from the First Division.
