On This Day – 27th March
Jamie Carragher landed himself in hot water on this day in 2002 in an FA Cup tie against Arsenal at Highbury.
In a fiercely competed game, Martin Keown was sent off after 66 minutes. Seven minutes later, Dennis Bergkamp was given his marching orders after a badly-timed lunge on Carragher.
A coin was thrown from the crowd at Carragher. The Liverpool right back picked it up and threw it straight back in the crowd. It was noticed by the referee and Carragher became the third player to be sent off.
The red card was just the start of Carragher’s punishment. He received a formal warning by the police and fined £40,000 by Liverpool. The Football Association also gave him a three match ban.
Arsenal would go on and win a League and FA Cup Double at the end of the season. Their captain Tony Adams retired at the end of the season, almost twenty years after making his first team debut.
